Wrapping Up ENLETS 2.0 in Tallinn

As we approach the end of ENLETS 2.0, the final meeting of this funding phase was held in Tallinn, Estonia, on the 25th and 26th of June 2024 at the Ministry of the Interior. During this meeting, members of the Green Policing TIG summarised activities and looked towards the future.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for all of us to network, exchange ideas, and discuss the day’s topics in a more informal way. I encourage everyone to use this time to connect with other participants and build the relationships that are so vital to our collective success,” said Piret Filanovitš from the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board in her welcoming words, setting the tone for an informative and productive session. Following the opening remarks, we had the privilege of hearing from several experts who shared their insights on specific topics, focusing on innovative approaches and best practices that can drive sustainability in law enforcement agencies. Their contributions undoubtedly provided us with valuable perspectives and practical ideas.

In the end, the group discussed not only the Summary Report, which serves as a comprehensive document that encapsulates all the group’s discussions, but also set the direction for future objectives and initiatives for ENLETS 3.0. This session was crucial in compiling the findings, recommendations, and action plans.

We were there to collaborate, share knowledge, and shape the future of sustainable practices in law enforcement and wider communities. A big thank you to the Estonian Ministry of the Interior and the whole team who allowed us to gather in Tallinn and contributed to the success of this event.

Highlights from the Event:

  • Important questions that have arisen: How will green policing change and impact the way of working in law enforcement, and more importantly, what kind of benefits can we expect if green policing changes operational concepts?
  • In the evolving law enforcement landscape, the Green Policing Technology Interest Group is emerging as a key initiative within the ENLETS 2.0 programme towards sustainable and effective policing across Europe. This TIG, within the European Network of Law Enforcement Technology Services (ENLETS), is at the forefront of integrating green technologies and practices within law enforcement, aligning with the broader objectives of the European Union Green Deal (EGD) and the ‘Fit for 55’ initiative.
  • The Green Policing TIG outlines the level of application of EGD in the conditions of LEAs of individual EU Member States. The majority of LEAs address this issue by gradually modernising their assets with a focus on saving all types of energy. Specifically, this involves the purchase (testing) of electric vehicles, the introduction of energy management of buildings, the installation of photovoltaics, the insulation of buildings, the development of waste management systems, and the implementation of innovative work methods that minimise the ecological footprint while increasing operational efficiency.
  • TIG’s work is not only about exchanging best practices in the transition to green technologies; it is a comprehensive effort to support cooperation aimed at creating conditions for the joint use of European subsidy resources and forming joint international project consortia to build a common ecological security infrastructure. The absence of such infrastructure has long hindered the effectiveness and efficiency of international law enforcement cooperation.
  • By establishing and operating this network of police experts within ENLETS in the field of ecology, the TIG management aims to highlight the need for cooperation in the economic security of LEAs.
  • GP TIG’s scope encompasses a comprehensive approach to procurement activities in LEAs, particularly focusing on three main pillars: Green Mobility, Green Police Buildings, and Green Ways of Working.
